The creative process to create your one’s logo is complex and absolutely personal, however there are common steps and using a methodology can simplify the process. I followed the following workflow:

1. Identification of the type of logo

Logos are divided into:

  • Iconic / Symbolic : symbolic image of the company (an example of which is the icon of Apple’s bitten apple)
  • Logotype / Wordmark : the logo consists of the name of the company with a unique style font (such as the Google logo).
  • Combination Mark The mark in this case is composed by combining a text with a symbol / icon a (for example the NASA logo, or the Harley Davidson or Starbucks logo)

I immediately discarded the purely graphic logo because it requires considerable graphic skills but above all because in reality the qualities associated with a graphic logo are often the result of the marketing effort associated with the positioning of the same.

For the same reason I also excluded the Combination Mark option as I would have had to work out a graphic symbol anyway.

So I chose to create a Wordmark and focused on finding a character that I liked aesthetically and as far as possible represented me, and here I discovered that looking for a character can really be an endless activity and that after a while the endless choice possibilities practically block any possible choice (as Kierkegaard taught).

The first result (quite disappointing) of this exercise was the following:

Working a little then I came to this result:

It seemed like a good result but on reflection I thought that a multicolored logo would have been perfect for the parts where my site had a white background but could have created some problems with pages with a colored background. However, transforming the logo into a mono / two-color version was an idea to be discarded as the logo would have become too simple.

At this point, I retraced my steps and took the chance to try creating a Combination Mark .

2. Search for references

The first thing to do when biased with a creative project is to find references, or do research of ideas, interesting graphic elements or even just examples of logos that we like and that can represent a good starting point. In my case the main references, doing various searches on Google images were:

In particular, this last logo caught my interest. The upper part looks like an A and the lower part looks like an F. I liked that both letters were merged into a single logo but nevertheless distinct and that the overall design was square and not rounded.

3. Definition of the idea

Starting then from the basic idea of this logo I wanted but it was evident the letter F and turning 90 degrees logo I finally realized that I was on the right track.

then made sketches to see if the idea worked:

4. Implementation

At this point I moved to realization. I used Sketch (but Adobe Illustrator or any other vector graphics software could go very well) and the golden section to define the proportions of the logo (in this tutorial on youtube you can see the methodology I followed: how to design a logo with golden ratio ). The end result was:

But there was still something that did not convince me: the F did not look like a F. A final sketch and finally I had the final design of the logo which also had the advantage of increasing the visibility of the A inside the logo.

A last update in Sketch and here is the definitive logo:

Finally I entered the name and surname to complete the Wordmark:
